WOMEN! WOMEN! WOMEN!
We all agree that women are class.
Not just Countess Markievicz, all women. This website is for everyone.
About
Set up in response to ladsladsladz.com to promote women. The website has a secondary aim of campaigning for Homeboys bar to include pictures of women on their wall of Irish Freedom Fighters and writers.
Below is a short list, by no means exhaustive, of some women that deserve recognition for the part they played in the Nationalist struggle. Please note that these women's accomplishments are broader and richer than a few sentences can capture.
Some women to start with (as well as Countess Markievicz)
Maud Gonne
Maud Gonne said "I don't like this exclusion of women from the national fight". Despite being an activist and hunger striking Nationalist, Maud is usually remembered as Yeat's love interest, and is not recognised for her contributions to Ireland.
Margaret Skinnider
Shot three times in action during the Rising, Margaret later wrote ”We had the same right to risk our lives as the men [. . .] in the constitution of the Irish Republic, women were on an equality with men,”. After the war she contributed to the trade union and women's rights movements.
Hanna Sheehy Skeffington
Hanna Sheehy Skeffington, suffragette, Nationalist and human rights campaigner, was referred to as "the ablest of all the fearless women who worked for Ireland's freedom".
